Birdsong

The novel of love and loss in the era of the First World War by Sebastian Faulks, has been beautifully dramatised by the BBC.   Part one of two was shown last night.  It has taken a long time to get it onto our screen but last nights first episode of two showed it was worth the wait. Eddie Redmayne and Clemence Poesy were so well cast as the lovers Stephen and Isabelle.  A real treat for a January evening.

  1. I read the book a long time ago and all I can remember of it is the miners and the tunnels under the enemy lines. I thought I'd like to see the BBC adaptation to remind me of the book but couldn't watch last night - I'll have to catch up on iplayer as it sounds as if you enjoyed it:)

  2. I loved the first episode last night. I haven't read the novel so I'm trying to avoid learning more before I see the final episode. Have you been watching Midwife?

  3. I remember being so undone by the book, I couldn't face watching it last night in case I was reduced to a sobbing mess again. Coward! X

    1. I enjoyed it as a drama, but it could have been so much more. Removing the 70s narrator meant it was necessarily a different story and perspective, and although I am sure it made sense to dramatise it that way, it also removed much of the emotional build up. I thought Eddie Redmayne was eminently watchable, even though it seemed over reliant on close ups of his face, Joseph Mawle as Firebrace was superb.
