Oh I so agree with you. It seems they are denying women priests the right to promotion in a way, based on their sex, and surely, if this happened in the world of commerce, they wouldn't be allowed to get away with it, sexism and all that?
So true Maggie, I saw an interview last night with a priest who declared women can no more be bishops than men can be mothers. I think he was a time traveller from the 15th century! It's interesting women are entrusted to do the flowers, make the tea and clean the church...
I don't think this will be the end of it. It is, after all, blatant sexism, and as Maggie says, they wouldn't allowed to get away with it in any other situation.
I seem to be having trouble leaving a comment here, I'll try again! As an RC I'm not in the best position to comment. Women were instrumental in the early church and what a great pity it is that the original messages of love and tolerance that emanate from he Gospels, have been twisted by mankind over the centuries. The case of that poor lady in Ireland made me despair, the church lacks humanity in so many spheres.
Thank you for persevering Ellen, and well said. The only silver lining I can come up with in all this is that maybe by the church being so controversial, and when terrible things happen like the preventable death of Savita Halappanavar in Ireland, debate will happen and change will come.
One would hope so, but people appear to be so entrenched in their opinions. For me, faith is trying to live your life in a decent, humane, tolerant way. I only wish the church hierarchy, in all faiths, would go back to such basics!
