Wimp Of The Week

My last post was about my tbr pile, but I thought I ought to report 'mid duty' that I have wimped out of reading one of them - The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.

I am scared of the dark,.  So what was I thinking when I picked up Waters gothic, ghostly tale, set in a dilapidated mansion in England during the 1940s?  I'll tell you.  I was thinking how scary can a book be?

I once watched the Shining (gotta love Jack doing his demented Johnny Carson impression), on my own, in the top floor flat of an Edwardian mansion, late at night, so I don't consider myself a complete scaredy cat.  So I started, but unlike the late great Magnus Magnusson, I wont be finishing.  I only got a short way through, the suspense killed me.

Has anyone else managed to read it?

  1. No, I've not read this one... and also have to admit I am a complete wimp too - hate anything scarey - certainly am NOT one to watch any kind of horror film or with any violence in it! X

  2. Not my cup of tea either... who needs a book to frighten yourself? In my case, jumping on the scales is scary enough thank you!

  3. I take heart from your kind comments, I've been hearing creaks in the night since I put the book down. A few years ago my daughter got spooked by Roald Dahls, The Witches, so I hid it at the back of the books in the bookshelf - looks like there'll be another book joining it!

  4. I haven't read this book although I've loved her others - I'm not one for ghost stories - I did read Susan Hill's 'The Woman in Black' many years ago and frightened myself & the TV adaptation played on my mind for weeks, as did 'The Monkey's Paw' when I was a young teenager - I'll join you in the 'wimp' corner:)

  5. I finished it, but after putting it down one night I had to sleep with the light on.

  6. I did not like it at all. I fely nervous while reading it but felt it all was overdone and it had the feel of a penny horror book.

  7. Thank you for coming over to visit my new blog. Mrs Semi Expat was very kind to refer her readers.

I’ve enjoyed going through your blog archives to see what you’ve been reading, gardening, baking, capturing on film, etc.

As for The Little Stranger, I can’t say that will be on the top of my tbr pile – I too am a major wimp ... put me in the wimp corner.

I look forward to popping in and seeing what you’re up to (now that I've figured out how to do so :-)

  8. Finally! I am able to comment on my own blog again, for ages it's not allowed me too, has anyone else had this problem?

Thank you Rosie and SeaGreen, I appreciate the company in wimps corner.

Enid, thank you for the feedback, I now wont feel the urge to go back and start what I finished. Life is too short.

Ms M, a pleasure. Hope you are enjoying your new blogsperience.

  11. Yes, I've read 'The Little Stranger'. I was disappointed, I have enjoyed all her previous books very much so this one was a bit of a let down.

  12. I haven't read it, but now I'm going to! I love a good scary story. But, yes I will have nightmares and wake up paranoid in the middle of the night. I don't know why I do it to myself! I love scary books though, not scary movies. I can't take the gore, I prefer it written rather than visual.
